12 Tips on How to Stay Positive While (still) Unemployed

Its true. It took us a long time to graduate and pass the board examinations. Its also true that there are many of us still unemployed or underemployed. We even took a close look on the state of unemployment of nurses in our own SONA.

Every year, nursing schools in the Philippines produce new nursing graduates that may join the pool of registered nurses who are unemployed or official members of the RN Tambay Club. There are around 200,000 unemployed nurses in the Philippines and you are one of them am I right? And you may be wondering how you can you fight your way to employment against those 200,000 nurses.

Its also saddening that the United States, the reason you took up nursing years ago, stopped issuing Visas for nurses in the Philippines. Those are some of the reasons that makes your smile turn into a frown.

Despite all those sling-through-the-heart-facts there are still many reasons to smile about.

Here are some tips on how to stay positive while looking for employment.

1. Unemployment Will End. You know it, they know it.

Of course! You must have to work some time in your life right? Life is a waste if you spend it most of your time worrying. Accept the fact that in our world, there are times of unemployment and there are times of employment. What’s weird is that there is a shortage of nurses around the world right now, even in the Philippines.

We should be thankful that our government working its way on removing volunteerism among nurses, and providing more and more job openings for us like the RNheals program.

Also in due time, more and more countries will open its doors for Philippine nurses. Unemployment will end (itaga mo yon sa bato).

2. Look for Other Doors!

When one door closes, another one opens right? Try to look for other jobs like medical transcriptionist, call center agents, customer care representatives, research assistants and many more.

3. I’m a Nurse and I know a lot of things.

Don’t think all the time that your a nurse and you’ll have to be one. In times like this, learn to bend yourself, and breakdown your skill set. Find out the things you are great at and use them to look for a job.

4. Know your capabilities well

Know the things you are great at and not-so-great at. Invest on the things you know you’re great at. Make them your assets. Improve on those you are not great at. Make them your assets then. (Word of the day “great at”)

5. Try to Volunteer for Charitable Organizations

Not only the feeling of self-fulfillment and being to help others is great, but also you’ll be able to practice your profession in some way.

6. Apply to as many hospitals as possible

Write your resume well, come in time and dress appropriately during interviews. “The more entries your send, the more chances of winning”…right?

7. Reward Yourself for trying

Even small efforts needs to be rewarded. Doing so will help you pursue further and further.

8. Be amazed of what you accomplished

Graduating and passing the board examinations is not an easy task and you’ll agree on me with that.  But you were able to do it! Remember that you are the master of your own self and its up to you how to take your life and use it.

9. Yes there are problems

Do not blame the unemployment. Visualize yourself as that person who can stand out and fight its way through a problem. There are choices too! And those choices are yours to make.

10. Be thankful for what you have

Look around and be aware of the people who believed in you, the things you have and the lessons you have learned throughout this journey from day one of your nursing life. Use them to your advantage. :)

11. Trust Him

Just like how you trusted in Him during the times you are to defend your thesis, take your board examination and the endless reasons why you should trust Him.

12. And lastly, accept the challenge.

Accept the challenge! :)
