Did you know that we have different ways on how to learn? Let say I prefer and learn more about actual demonstrations than boring lectures. There are five learning styles which are visual, auditory, global, detail and kinesthetic. By learning what your style is you can use this as an advantage in taking up nursing. You’ll also be able to compensate for your weakness or limitations. By making your learning style work for you, you’ll get more of your courses.

Learning Styles in Nursing

This post will help you be comfortable with your learning style.

The Visual Learner

Visual learners loves to read about things or watch demonstrations. If you are a visual learner you prefer observation and watching stuff. If this is your learning style, look for all visual materials.

You need to get the most information via:

  • Reading textbooks, handouts, articles on the Internet, lecture notes, magazines, and medical journals
  • Watching demonstrations including videos

The Auditory Learner

The auditory learners gain more information when they hear about things. If you learn more with this style, you should seek out all auditory information.

Learning via listening through these activities:

  • Discussions and lectures
  • Question and answer sessions
  • Speeches and reading aloud
  • Study groups
  • Recorded lectures either a video or a podcast
  • Repeating what the instructor says during a lecture in your head

The Kinesthetic Learner

If you are a kinesthetic learner, you prefer to learn by doing it. This is a great learning style for hospital duty. If you find it very easy for you to learn any information by doing something, then you are a certified kinesthetic learner.

Recommended activities includes:

  • Looking for workshops and skill labs
  • Volunteer to perform in-class demonstrations
  • Attending field trips
  • Help with group projects
  • Look for volunteer work like in hospitals or health centers
  • Offering a tutorial
  • Practice your learned skills with your family members (vital signs taking, health teachings, etc)

The Global Learner

You are a global learner when you think about the “big picture” or how if you would apply your learning in wide audience. If you are a global learner, you enjoy how concepts are related to one another. You love analogies and how a certain topic is connected to another. You may also prefer activities wherein an instructor writes certain facts and helps you make conclusions about the material.

Recommended “Global” activities includes:

  • Summarizing your lecture notes and drawing conclusions about the material
  • Sketching diagrams to show how different ideas come together to form the “big picture”
  • Coming up with questions about the topics covered in class
  • Asking those questions to your instructor

The Detail Learner

Detail learners prefer to learn new information in a logical pattern. If you are student nurse with a detail learning style, you like to follow directions closely. You may do best in class wherein your instructor follows a strict outline of the topic.

Recommended activities includes:

  • Summarizing your lecture notes with bulleted points
  • Draw diagrams to related small pieces of information to larger themes or ideas, an idea cloud perhaps
  • Writing down questions as they come to mind during lectures or while reading

Conclusion

So there you have it, the five learning styles. Just take note that if you are a visual learner doesn’t mean your not a kinesthetic learner. You have a different percentage for each learning style, and this guide will help you enhance your dominant learning style. To learn more about learning style check this out.
