5 Mistakes to Avoid as a Nurse

After graduation and passing the board examinations, like most of us, we’ll likely look for a job. If you are lucky and determined despite the situation of oversupply of nurses in the Philippines, it will be great if you did land on a job.

However, you need to remember that there are more qualified nurses and more willing nurses than you, so here are some mistakes you want to avoid once you have a job as a nurse.

1 Arriving Late

Nobody likes someone who arrives late. When you are told to arrive for your morning shift at 7AM, you’ll be replacing a night nurse who’s desperate to go home and have some rest. Every minute of delay is painful for that nurse. Always be on time.

2 Looking Un-groomed and Untidy

We nurses are bound to maintain neat and be hygienic. Always make sure you look presentable and clean. Looking unkempt is an insult to your profession. How can someone expect great care from someone who looks as though they don’t care about themselves right?

3 Not respecting patients and co-workers

There was this one time a volunteer nurse reported a patient’s blood pressure to be 180/100 to his senior nurse. The senior nurse got irritated for God-knows-what-reason, and shouted to the volunteer nurse “Mamamatay din yon!” [That patient will die soon!]. Hearing that, its very unprofessional and even immoral not just as a nurse but also as a person.

4 Dressing Inappropriately

Be as simple as you can be. Wear only things you’ll need like a watch, your scrubs or uniform. Don’t be revealing and be modest in the things you wear. Do not wear strong perfumes or colognes and especially don’t highlight your hair in multiple colors. Its very basic. We lived with these rules far when we are still nursing students.

5 Backstabbing Others

It is very inappropriate to talk about a patient or spread gossip about co-staff, doctors and your seniors. You don’t want to be the center of the topic too right? Go about your duties, and never entertain anything more than pleasant, casual, lighthearted conversation on acceptable subjects.
