MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — Maplewood police released a security video on Thursday showing 68-year-old Charles Logan attacking four nurses using a metal bar he ripped from his hospital bed. The incident happened on the morning of November 2, leaving eight nurses injured.
Police say Logan was delusional and literally thought people were trying to kill him. He fled from St. John’s Hospital and died after officers tased and arrested him.
“We know there was a brief struggle,” said Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell. “He was in handcuffs and moments later he went unresponsive. Immediately after that, he went limp. Officers turned him over and they realized he stopped breathing. They checked for pulse, he did not have one.”
Police performed CPR on Logan as emergency personnel brought Logan back to St. John’s, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Police said Logan checked into the hospital three days earlier because he had become confused and paranoid, after a routine surgery at another hospital.
Family members told Fox 9 that they believe he was given the wrong medication and that caused his violent rampage.
Police are convinced these violent moments are not reflective of Logan’s real character.
“This was totally outside of character, so something occurred, and we don’t know what that was,” Schnell said.
Logan’s body was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Eight nurses suffered minor injuries and one suffered a collapsed lung, according to a report by CBS Minnesota. Another nurse, who did not require hospitalization, was eight months pregnant.
On the other hand, Minnesota Nurses Association released a statement about the incident.
