Choledocolithiasis Pathophysiology & Schematic Diagram

Choledocolithiasis PathophysiologyCholedocolithiasis is the presence of gallstones in the common bile duct.

The biliary system is composed of the gall bladder, bile ducts, and the systic duct. The cystic duct (from the gall bladder) joins with the hepatic duct (from the liver) to form the common bile duct.

The function of the biliary system is to transport bile (secreted by the liver) from the gallbladder (where it is stored) into the duodenum. This condition causes jaundice and liver cell damage, and is a medical emergency, requiring the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedure or surgical treatment.
